X-MINING 【R&D】 Fe-Ga Magnetostrictive Alloy Single Crystal

Sumitomo Metal Mining has been manufacturing and selling crystal materials used in various applications for many years.
Based on our proprietary technologies, we have developed Fe-Ga magnetostrictive alloy single crystals that can be used for vibration power generation for IoT (Internet of Things).
Our high-quality Fe-Ga magnetostrictive material makes it possible to realize magnetostrictive power generator with small variation in power generation characteristics, , and is expected to be applied as an independent power source in maintenance-free wireless sensor networks.
We aim to contribute to society with highly advanced materials through open innovation with device manufacturers and universities.

Material Properties

Single-crystal Fe-Ga magnetostrictive material is one of the key materials for vibration power generation (energy harvesting) used in IoT with independent power supplies.
We have established the technology to grow high quality single crystals with small compositional variation in the crystal by adopting the vertical Bridgman (VB) method as the crystal growth method.
It is possible to grow single crystals with a rectangular prism shape of up to □66 mm×66 mm and a cylindrical shape of up to φ52mm.
Our single-crystal material has a stable and large magnetostriction constant (about 300 ppm) and shows excellent properties as a magnetostrictive material for vibration power generator for IoT. By processing the grown single crystals, we are able to produce samples of various sizes and shapes, mainly plates. We aim to contribute to society with high-quality materials through open innovation with device manufacturers and universities.

Vibration power generation is a technology that generates energy from vibration using the piezoelectric effect, electromagnetic induction effect, electrostatic induction effect, and inverse magnetostriction effect, and is attracting attention as a micro power source for IoT. Our Fe-Ga Magnetostrictive Alloy Single Crystal are characterized by low variation in magnetostrictive properties, and exhibit excellent characteristics as magnetostrictive materials for vibration power generation devices that utilize the inverse magnetostriction effect.

What is Fe-Ga alloy?

Fe-Ga alloy is one of the iron-based magnetostrictive materials, which is attracting attention for vibration power generation applications because of its high magnetostriction coefficient (about 300ppm) and high mechanical properties.
